Free colonoscopies to help increase education and awareness about colon cancer
The physicians and staff at Digestive Health Specialists, in conjunction with March being colon cancer awareness month, once again will be donating their time and facilities to perform free screening colonoscopies for persons in need. This is the third consecutive year the colon cancer prevention center has offered the service.
“We hope providing free colonoscopies will help save the life of some who may not have had a colonoscopy due to financial reasons,” Dr. Bill Bray at Digestive Health Specialists said. “We also want to send a message to our community that colon cancer is preventable and that screening colonoscopies can save lives.”
The free colonoscopies are being offered from March 1 through March 30. They are for persons who have an annual income of less than $20,000, no health insurance, who have not been screened previously, and who are 50 or older. The procedures will be performed in the Kernersville, Thomasville, and Advance offices of Digestive Health Specialists.
“We are making improvements in the battle against colon cancer, but more awareness is needed,” commented Dr. Tom Orli at Digestive Health Specialists. “The more we educate the public about screening for colon cancer, the more lives will be saved.”
According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in of adults in the United States. Preventive screening has reduced the number of incidences of cancer the past few years but continued awareness and education is needed as one half of the adults over the age of 50 still have not undergone a screening colonoscopy.
The practice will limit the free colonoscopies to 50.
